We'll be following the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life. Students will do lots of writing over multiple genres.
We're reading our first novel- Touching Spirit Bear- together as a class. Students should read at least one chapter every day, including weekends. Emphasis is first on comprehension- understanding what is going on clearly. For self assessment students have reading guides. Students are encouraged to reread any section where comprehension is not clear.
